Gas Tank Park update

Partial rendering of Gas Tank Park plan

The design for phase I of the new Gas Tank Park in Elmhurst has been completed and the project awarded to a contractor. We are currently in the process of obtaining the necessary permits to begin construction.

In 2005 the Keyspan Company sold this 6-acre plot of land to the City and Parks Department in exchange for one dollar. The new park, the former site of Keyspan's Elmhurst Gas Tanks, is being funded by $11.1 from Mayoral and City Council funds. The first phase, costing $8.25 million will include greening of the park, installing pathways and fencing, as well as new retaining walls along the east and west borders. Three large boulders that were discovered in Brooklyn earlier this year will be incorporated into the design. Future phases, pending community discussion, may include a playground, a comfort station, a sitting area and synthetic turf field. The new park is a critical need in this dense Queens community.
