Juniper Civic celebrates 70th anniversary 11/2/2008 8:22:00 PM by Christina Wilkinson 
Robert Holden accepts proclamation from Borough President Helen Marshall
Queens Borough President Helen Marshall was awarded the JPCA's first annual preservation award for her role in securing funds to dismantle St. Saviour's Church. Deputy Borough President Karen Koslowitz was also recognized for her help with this project. JPCA 1st Vice President Lorraine Sciulli was given a lifetime achievement award for her work to save our neighborhood throughout the years. Borough President Marshall then declared November 1st, 2008 as Juniper Park Civic Association Day in the Borough of Queens. Councilman Tony Avella honored the civic with a legislative proclamation. Music was donated by D/J and JPCA Executive Board Member, Gary Colter. Flowers and balloons were donated by Tony Nunziato of Enchanted Florist. The 70th Anniversary Committee was chaired by JPCA Executive Board member John Killcommons, and the Committee consisted of Lorraine Sciulli and Lu Sadowski. Other attendees included Councilman Joseph Addabbo, former Assemblyman Michael Cohen and City Council Candidate Elizabeth Crowley. 200 guests enjoyed dinner and dancing until 11pm. While celebrating this milestone, Juniper Civic is looking forward to many more years of serving our community. Below is the text from the proclamations awarded that night. Office of the Borough President Borough of Queens Declaration of Honor This declaration acknowledges the Juniper Park Civic Association on the occasion of its 70th anniversary celebration and dinner dance. Since its inception in 1938, the Juniper Park Civic Association has brought community issues to the forefront and taken action that has positively impacted the neighborhoods of Maspeth, Middle Village and Elmhurst. The Juniper Park Civic Association is recognized for its outstanding leadership in preserving the character of the community it serves. Therefore, I, Helen M. Marshall, President of the Borough of Queens in the City of New York, do hereby declare Saturday, November 1, 2008 as “The Juniper Park Civic Association Day” in Queens. Done at Queens Borough Hall, Kew Gardens, in the City of New York on this, the 31st Day of October in the year two thousand eight. Helen M. Marshall President of the Borough of Queens _____________________________________ COUNCIL MEMBERS CITY OF NEW YORK PROCLAMATION Whereas we, the undersigned council members, are proud to honor the Juniper Park Civic Association on the occasion of its 70th anniversary dinner dance for its tremendous service to the community, and Whereas the Juniper Park Civic Association is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents in the communities of Middle Village, Maspeth and Elmhurst. It was established in 1938 with the sole purpose of being an organized body to fight adversity with a unified voice in the community. Seventy years later, the clear and vibrant voice continues to make itself heard to preserve the area as a livable, viable and cherished place for current residents and future generations, and Whereas the Juniper Park Civic Association supports positive initiatives and responds to new challenges facing the community by sponsoring town meetings and other events for such issues and by publishing the “Juniper Berry” a quarterly civic magazine. With tireless volunteer reporters, this widely distributed publication offers its readers all the necessary information about their local interests, from crime prevention to meeting reports, photographs, editorials, history and more, and Whereas over the years, the Juniper Park Civic Association has built an incredible legacy of achievements. Just a few of its recent victories have included helping to secure a zip code change for Elmhurst residents to Middle Village (11379), pushing for additional sound barriers along the LIE, from just east of 69th Street to 75th Street, securing the six-acre park on the former Elmhurst Gas Tanks site, working with former Council Member Tom Ognibene to oversee the total reconstruction of Juniper Valley Park, and the formation of the Juniper Juniors Civic Association for kids, and Whereas today under the direction of President Robert Holden and a dedicated Board of Directors, Executive Board, Counsels, Advisers and Committee Chairpersons, the Juniper Park Civic Association thrives. With their leadership and member support, the Association continues to fortify and enrich the community and all of New York City; now, therefore Be it known that we, the undersigned council members are proud to honor the Juniper Park Civic Association on the grand occasion of their 70th anniversary.
